Dear Parents,

The arrival of the Autumn Term brings the return of Tuesday night scouting to Thornford. The Beavers, Cubs and Scouts evening activities are attached to this covering note. As you may or may not be aware, we are starting a Scout Troop this September. The first evening for this new troop will be Tuesday 16 September. The Troop will meet from 7.30 pm (1930Hrs – for meJ) to 9.00 pm (2100Hrs) at the village hall. Scouts are for anyone between the ages of 10 – 14 years.

The group has had a successful first year with numbers on the increase. Many of the Beavers were awarded Challenge Badges for all the activities that they have completed. The Cubs too have been challenged in various ways; many of them took part in the summer camp, which went very well.

There is, as always a plea for help. The group still requires parent help on both the committee and warranted (uniform) for both Beavers and Scouts. There can never be enough helpers and leaders – it is a fact that the more there are, means less work for each individual. We are also constantly on the lookout for new fundraising ideas. If parents have any fundraising ideas, please let us know.

We would like to thank all at the Kings Arms Public House for their very generous donation of £75 raised from a recent Quiz Night. Without local and very often anonymous fundraising like this we would find it hard to function.

During the evening of the 4th Nov 03 we intend to have some sparklers for the children to celebrate bonfire night. If you do not wish your child to par-take in this activity please inform a uniformed leader. On a note of safety, sand and water buckets will be provided for the safe extinguishing of sparklers. Your child must be wearing gloves to handle the sparklers – NO GLOVES, NO SPARLERS!

We would be most grateful if members of the group attend each evening in FULL UNIFORM. The reasons for this are as follows:

a.       Ceremonies are to be carried out in uniform. (Including receiving badges)

b.      Allows leaders too instantly see who are Beavers, Cubs or Scouts.

c.       Saves on wear and tear of other clothing!

Children will be allowed to take off items of uniform if they so wish once the evenings activities have started.

The timings for Beavers (unless otherwise notified) will be from 5.45 pm (1745Hrs) to 6.45 pm (1845Hrs), Cubs (unless otherwise notified) will be from 6.45 pm (1845Hrs) to 8.15 Pm (2015Hrs). The Scout Troop will meet from 7.30 pm (1930Hrs – for meJ) to 9.00 pm (2100Hrs). There will be revised times for the group evenings – the first anniversary party will be from 6.30 pm (1830Hrs) until 8.30 pm (2030Hrs).

Finally let me thank-you for all the support that you have given the group in its first year. My personal thanks go to all members of the committee, uniformed leaders and helpers without which there would be no scout group.

Yours in Scouting

JThorne
